Start with your use
A helmet needs to sit securely and meet the rules for your market and activity. Compare comfort and ventilation only after those basics. A crash-damaged helmet needs replacement according to its maker's guidance.
Which route fits?
For commuting or long rides, choose a helmet you will wear consistently and can adjust securely; ventilation and weight are useful comparisons only after fit.
For an aero-focused model, ask whether the claimed benefit is relevant to your actual riding. A different shape can change comfort and cooling.
After an impact, follow the maker's replacement instructions even when damage is not visible. Do not treat an undamaged appearance as proof of protection.
Check before you buy
- Measure your head and use the model-specific fit range.
- Check that the helmet sits level and stays secure when adjusted, without painful pressure.
- Confirm the applicable safety marking and the manufacturer's replacement guidance.
What the evidence cannot tell you
An aero label or high price is not evidence that a helmet fits you better. Athvaro has no independently tested cycling helmet shortlist yet.
