Choose trail shoes by terrain and fit

Compare grip, protection and comfort for the surfaces you actually run, without a universal winner list.

Start with your use

Start with your usual terrain: smooth paths, wet rock or soft ground ask different things of an outsole. Fit remains the first filter; deeper lugs cannot rescue an uncomfortable shoe.

Which route fits?

For hard-packed, mostly dry paths, look for a comfortable versatile outsole before a deep mud lug.

For soft ground and frequent mud, inspect lug shape and spacing, then confirm how the shoe feels on your own route.

For long rocky routes, compare underfoot protection and stability. Our Salomon S/LAB Genesis 2, On Cloudultra 3 and ASICS TRABUCO MAX 5 entity pages explain different intended uses; they are not a podium.

Check before you buy

  1. Map the surfaces and weather of your typical route before comparing outsole patterns.
  2. Check toe room on descents and secure midfoot hold in your normal socks.
  3. Compare protection and cushioning against the distance you plan, then check the exact model's manufacturer details.

What the evidence cannot tell you

No outsole guarantees grip on every wet surface. Manufacturer specifications are not independent field tests.
