THE ADVENTURE EXPLAINED

What is Marathon des Sables?

A family of organised desert events, from staged racing to trekking and continuous ultra formats. The distance, self-sufficiency rules and support differ substantially by edition.

Distance & time

From a multi-day trek or three-stage event to the longer six-stage Legendary format; check the exact edition schedule.

How difficult?

Demanding to extreme, depending on format. Heat, sand, repeated distance and pack weight add up; prior endurance preparation matters.

What does preparation involve?

Choose the format first, then work from its current mandatory kit, food, medical and travel requirements. Test the entire carried setup in training.

Prepare

  • Compare the current formats and official entry requirements
  • Build an appropriate endurance and heat-preparation plan
  • Read the current edition’s rules and medical requirements

What will you need?

  • Check the edition-specific mandatory equipment list
  • Test footwear, pack and hydration in training
  • Plan food and recovery around the selected format

Travel & stays

Travel, accommodation and transfers differ by format and edition. Check the organiser’s current inclusions before booking separately.

Which MDS format fits?

MDS Legendary: approximately 250 km in six stages with food self-sufficiency; check the current edition before treating this as your goal.

MDS 120: choose a 70, 100 or 120 km course over three stages; compare the distance and travel package for the edition you want.

MDS Ultra: 100 km or 100 miles in a continuous race, with a 40-hour limit stated by the organiser; this is a different commitment from a staged event.

MDS Trek: 70–120 km across several stages with a lighter day pack; compare this format if the journey matters more than racing.

Distances and requirements vary by edition. Compare current details with the organiser.
